Bill, or Billy, as he was affectionately called by his siblings, was a World War II B17 pilot. Once his wartime service was completed, he attended pharmacy school at the Medical College of Virginia, where he met the love of his life, Barbara June Powell. They married soon after graduation in 1950 and began their life together in Richmond, Virginia. After moving to Hampton, Bill became the owner and operator of Circle Pharmacy for approximately 20 years. He then went to work for Charlie’s Pharmacy in downtown Hampton for several years.
Throughout his life, Bill was fond of camping, boating and fishing, and he maintained a large garden near his home for many summers. In his later years, he became a bird enthusiast, enjoying the comings and goings of the native birds on his backyard feeder. He also made friends with the squirrels in his backyard, convincing them to take peanuts from his hand through the open sliding glass door or tossing the peanuts out to those who would not.
Bill is survived by his children Alan W. Poland (Lynn), Mary P. Detlie, Thomas L. Poland (Sherri), Michael L. Poland (Vicky) and Nancy P. Hinson (Ricky), his sister Edith Ray Bradshaw, grandchildren Lindsay Detlie, Michael Poland (Lora), Rebecca Hinson and great grandson William Poland. He is also survived by many bonus grandchildren and their families.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Barbara, as well as his parents, William B. Poland Sr. and Sallie W. Tucker, sisters Margaret Thompson and Sarah Michlik, and brothers Tucker Poland and Robert (Bobby) Poland.
The family would like to extend their eternal gratitude to Kat, Avery, Toni, Sherri and Jessika. We could not have done it without you!
