Neufrania was born on November 16, 1927 in Angeles, Pampanga, Philippines. Her parents were Blas Serrano Bognot and Guadalupe Lugtu Bognot. She did not finish her elementary education but being smart, she was offered a job as a telephone operator at Clark Air Base in Pampanga. Together with her brothers and sisters, life had been wonderful for them despite hardships. They would reminisce about the World War II, their father’s Latin prayers, rituals in healing and laugh about everything they found amusing.
“Aning’ as she was fondly called by relatives, had the making of a great homemaker even in her youth. She loved to cook, do some embroidery, and keep the house spotless. She met and married Bienvenido Ednilao Apina, a World War II veteran; the marriage produced 8 children; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Bienvenido’s love of vehicles landed them in Manila and worked as a truck driver. From the meager income he gave Aning, she was able to save enough money to send their children to school and helped others to become seafarers.
She could have not finished her formal education, but she finished 2 short courses in an Adult School and received her certificates of completion. She instilled in her children’s minds the importance of education, likewise imparting the same to her grandchildren. Neufrania was a woman of values, modesty and patience and expected the same from her children. Neufrania’s 85 fruitful years on earth culminated on January 15, 2013 at Adventist Medical Center in Hanford, California. She was survived by her children; Eddie & Lulu, Rey & Marissa, Edna Jane & John Calvin, Thess & Mhon, Cherry & Dante, Bong & Liberty, Grace & Norbert and Shyla Ann. She also leaves behind her grandchildren; Malou, Aries, Nashrine, Lauderdale, Rexielou, Camille, RJ, JA, Maric, Ryan, Kyle, Chad, Daryll, CD, BL. Brica, Nico, Hernan, Michael and Steven.
