

Betty Cameron "Cam" Spence , 83, of Duxbury died peacefully at home on Sept. 24, 2011. She was born in Ware, MA on October 12, 1927, the daughter of the late Walter L. and Esther Parkhurst Cameron. A graduate of Palmer High School, she completed a post-graduate year at Northfield School before attending New England Baptist School of Nursing, where she received her RN degree in 1948. She was married on Dec. 30, 1950 and moved to Duxbury, where she raised five children. She also engaged in a wide variety of volunteer activities for organizations including Girl Scouts, PTA, Holy Family Church, Duxbury Council of Churches, CURA Visiting Nurse Assoc., Red Cross, Manomet Bird Observatory, King Caesar Fund, Duxbury Yacht Club and the United Farm Workers. She worked tirelessly for those less fortunate and taught her children and grandchildren by example. A great lover of music, she was an accomplished pianist and a long-time subscriber to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where her uncle was a violinist. She travelled widely with her family, enjoying the local cuisine wherever she found herself. She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years John F. Spence, Jr. and daughters Nancy of Cambridge, MA, Carolyn and her husband Jay Newton of Medway, MA, Elizabeth and her husband Jon Garrity of China, ME, Sarah of Brookline, MA and son John III of Los Angeles, CA, along with seven grandchildren, Eleanor, Zachary, Trevor, Meg, Annie, Peter and Jack. Mrs. Spence's brother Walter Cameron of Charlton, MA died in 2010. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St., Rte 53 in Hanover on Friday, Sep. 30th from 1:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 1st at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont St., Duxbury, MA. The private burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Rockland, MA.
