

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Hazel (Innis) and survived by his children – William, Carolyn, and Edward, as well as many extended family members. He was the son of the late Norman and Anna (Higgins) Straughn, and brother of the late Norman, Paul, Robert, Richard, Anna Malloy, and Ralph, and was survived by his sister, Shirley Tobin.
Harry was a graduate of Quincy High School Class of 1952. He served in the US Army from 1957-1959. Harry had progressively accomplished careers at Boston Gear Works, Foxboro Company, and Bendon Gear.
For more than 50 years, he was a high school, CYO, and community basketball official. Harry is a Past President and long-serving member of IABBO Board 54. He proudly taught and mentored generations of young officials. Harry was also a high school and community softball umpire.
Harry was a competitive and playful sportsman. Over years, he was a staple on several men’s softball teams on the South Shore winning many championships and accolades from his peers. He was fixture at the Hanover Swim and Tennis Club and Mill Pond Tennis Club. He and Hazel organized several fundraisers to support activities and programs for their son Edward and his friends, most notably the “Disney Kids” and Special Olympics.
A Celebration of Life and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Croi Health (formerly NVNA and Hospice) 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061 or to the Special Olympics, 514 Forest Street, Marlborough, MA 01752.
