
Mr. Henry F. Bates , 78, of St. Petersburg FL died Thursday, May 19, 2005 in the St. Petersburg General Hospital after an illness of several months. The son of the late Everett and Clara Morse Bates, he was born in Braintree on October 30, 1926. He was raised and educated in Braintree and was a 1944 graduate of Braintree High School. Mr. Bates graduated form Boston University in 1951 and received a Masters Degree from Boston University in 1978. He was employed as a Probation Officer for Plymouth County until his retirement in 1987. He was a longtime resident of Hanover before moving to Florida in 1987. He was a member and past president of the Hanover Lions Club. Mr. Bates served in the Navy during WW2 and was the recipient of the Pacific Theater Ribbon and a Navy Unit Commendation. He is survived by his wife, Frances Barile Bates, 3 sons, William Bates of Stoughton, Robert Bates of Attleboro, and Garry Bates of Georgia, VT, 2 daughters, Susan Clancy of Hanover and Janice Marshall of Carver, 1 brother, Richard Bates of Braintree, 4 sisters, Betty Deane of Walpole, Barbara Younie of Braintree, Marjorie Austin of Braintree and Ruth Younie of Weymouth and 6 grandchildren. He was the brother of the late William Bates. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at 9 AM in St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover Street, Rte 139 in Hanover. Interment will be in Hanover Center Cemetery. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Rte 53 in HANOVER on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
