Loretta A (Travers) Jones (Tabaroni) of Hingham, formerly from Hanover, passed away peacefully on June 17th at the age of 89—one day shy of her 90th birthday. Just prior to her passing, she had been surrounded by loved ones at her bedside, sharing their favorite memories of her with each other.
Loretta was born and raised in Braintree. She graduated from Braintree High School, and then attended nursing school at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. After graduating, she spent her entire 42 year nursing career working at South Shore Hospital’s Labor and Delivery department, where she touched the lives of thousands of families by helping to bring their precious children into the world.
Loretta loved spending time with her family and friends. She also loved to cook and entertain. Her home in Hanover was the central gathering place for family, friends and neighbors. Many wonderful afternoons and evenings were spent on her lovely 3-season porch, enjoying the cool breeze, sipping wine, playing cards and checkers, and marveling over her perfectly grilled steaks. She was legendary for her delicious chocolate eclairs, blueberry cake and mouthwatering Italian meatballs. She loved to travel, and she had the opportunity to journey frequently to Bermuda and the Cayman Islands with her friends and cousins. She also had many memorable vacations across the US and Europe with her second husband, Bob Tabaroni.
After her retirement from South Shore Hospital, Loretta eventually sold her home in Hanover, and moved to Linden Ponds in Hingham, where she and Bob spent many years enjoying the comfort and safety of that community. She often said that living at Linden Ponds was like “being on vacation every day.”
Loretta is survived by her 3 children: Robert and wife Oksana Jones of VA, Lynn Darmetko of Weymouth and Brian and wife Jenni Jones of VA. She also leaves 5 grandchildren: Jeff and wife Lisa Darmetko of CT, Amy and husband Dacyn Channell of VT, Emily and husband David Dent of FL, Heather and husband Jacob Hickey of TN, and Nicole Jones of VA. She will also be missed by her 3 great-grandchildren: Collin and Connor Keighley, and Anthony Darmetko. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Charles and Josephine (Trojano) Travers, her first husband Robert Jones, and second husband Robert Tabaroni.
Visitation and a brief service for family and friends will be at Sullivan Funeral Home in Hanover on Saturday, July 8th at 10 am. Burial will follow at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Linden Ponds and Rose Court continuing care. Their loving and compassionate care during her residency there helped Loretta live a fulfilling and dignified life. We will be forever grateful.
