

Michael James Harney, Jr., 77, of Hanover, MA, passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on March 3, 2023. Michael was born on December 17, 1945 in Washington DC, son of the late Michael and Ellen (Foley) Harney, Sr. of Brighton.
Michael is survived by his wife Carol and their children; Michael Harney III, Ryan Harney, Christopher Callinan and Alexandra Callinan. Michael was the proud grandfather (Puppi) to Jack and Madison Harney. Michael is also survived by his brother Thomas Harney and his wife Martha of Swansea, MA, his sister Margaret Mooney of St. Petersburg, FL, his sister Ellen Harney of Needham, MA and his brother, John Hart and his wife Susan of Stuart, FL. Michael also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Michael graduated from Saint Columbkille High School in Brighton, MA. He then went on to graduate from Boston State and later obtained his master’s degree from Northeastern University.
Michael was a proud member of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam conflict. He was recognized with a medal as a sharpshooter and specialized in Army intelligence.
Michael enjoyed many successes throughout his life. He was an avid skier and very committed to his certification as a National Ski Patroller.
Anyone who knew Michael understood his real passion was the sea and sailing. He earned his United States Coast Guard Captain’s License, recognizing him as a Merchant Marine Officer.
As an avid sailor, Michael made the British Virgin Islands his home away from home. He would frequently visit the B.V.I. and would charter sailing yachts and sail from island to island. He would always bring his friends along and his passion became contagious.
Michael was special in so many ways and will always hold a special place in the hearts of those he touched.
Visitation will take place at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Route 53, Hanover, on Thursday, March 16 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. A graveside service will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Ave, Bourne, on Friday, March 17 at 1:15 PM. A procession will depart from the Sullivan Funeral Home promptly at 11:45 AM.
