Surrounded by his loving family, and, with his wife by his side Bob passed from his life here on Earth on Monday, April 18, 2022.
Bob is survived by the Love of his life, Carol A. (Coughlin) Atkins; his daughter Judi and her husband, W. Jevens Strachan; his sons Robert V., Jr and John W. (Jay); his daughter Sally and her husband, Charles San George, II, and; his son, David G. His grandchildren Jevie, Jill, Melissa, Noelle, Jaymie, Lucy and Rebecca. His great grandchildren, Will, Sofia, Molly and Benjamin. His siblings Walter David Atkins, Betty Ann Cossette and Kathy Berry. Bob was predeceased by his sister, Sheryl Beers and brothers, Kenny, Billy and, Donnie. He will also be missed by a long list of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was a graduate of Charlestown High School Class of 1953. Out of high school he joined the Navy and was stationed as a submarine tender in New London, CT. Bob attended Wentworth Institute of Technology obtaining a Bachelors degree as an electrical engineer. He worked as the senior electrical engineer of the nuclear engineering department at Boston Edison until his retirement in 1994.
OFD (Originally From Dorchester), he and Carol then made their home in Hanover in 1966. They became "Snow Birds" in 1999 when they began Wintering in Ft. Myers, FL.
Bob was a big sports fan and was very involved in HYAA Hockey when his sons played.
He was an avid surf-cast fisherman and spent many, many a day on the beaches of Cape Cod accompanied by his Golden Retrievers, along with quite a varying crew of friends and family. He was a member of the Massachusetts Beach Buggy Assoc and the Mass Striped Bass Assoc.
Bob got a lot of enjoyment tending his garden, sharing his bounty and competing with his brother Billy over who had the best garden.
Although he tried to put on a grumpy persona and was very well known as "The Grouch", he was one of the most compassionate people you'd ever met. He had such a kind heart. The expression, "would give you the shirt off his back", was him to a tee. How many people do you know that always registered an extra vehicle just in case someone needed to borrow it? Over the years, he opened his home to many friends and family members who needed a place to stay.
While he will be greatly missed, we're happy he is now pain free and at peace. Dad, go catch that 50 pounder!
Per Bob's request, there will be no wake or funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory can be made to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 266 Woods Hole Road, Woods Hole, MA 02543.
