April 8, 1934 – October 25, 2023
Robert K. “Bob” White, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 while at home and surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Florence “Jane” (Skelly) White, with whom he shared 67 wonderful years of marriage.
Bob is survived by his wife, Jane; his three daughters: Sharon and her husband Bernie Nunn, Deborah and her husband Jeff Weaver, Judi and her husband Paul Hanson; his grandchildren: Brian Nunn and his wife Lynsey, Ashley Nunn, Sheena Weaver, Evan Hanson, Emily Hanson, Erin Hanson; and his great grandchildren: Molly, Matthew, Schuyler and Adelyn.
Bob has two sisters, Barbara (White) McFarland of Wilbraham, Massachusetts and the late Linda (White) Russell of Milford, Connecticut.
Born on April 8, 1934, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Mildred White. A year after graduating from Stratford High School (Connecticut) Bob enlisted in the army under the “buddy” system with his high school friend Ed Mitola and honorably completed his two years of military service.
Bob and Jane were married on June 30, 1956. He took night classes at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After graduation he began working for The Travelers Insurance Company in 1960. In 1969, after Bob was transferred to the Boston, Massachusetts office of The Travelers, he and Jane moved to Hanover, Massachusetts. He relentlessly worked his way up in the Boston office for 30 years ultimately attaining the position of Financial Services Marketing Officer for the New England region.
Bob was involved in countless civic activities in Hanover. What follows is but a sampling. He was a long time member of the Hanover Lions Club and a two-time president. He was a member of the Phoenix Lodge. He coached Little League baseball for several years and was the 8-time chairman of the Hanover Tree Lighting Ceremony. He also chaired the Hanover Fire Station Building and Reconstruction Committee, Police Station Addition Committee and served on the Board of Selectman for six years.
Somehow Bob found the time for hobbies. He was an avid golfer-indeed a scratch golfer in his younger years. He played softball in the over 40 men’s league. At home, he loved working in his vegetable garden and making apple pies, pickles, and birdhouses.
After retirement, Bob did not slow down. He worked part-time at Ridders Farm Golf Course so he could do two things he loved; meeting people and playing golf. When Bob and Jane purchased a vacation home in Florida, Bob enjoyed even more golf and another passion; salt water fishing.
But Bob won’t be fondly remembered for his exhaustive accomplishments, but because he was a gentleman with a solid and reliable character, impeccable manners, a keen wit, and an unpretentious style; qualities he retained right to the very end.
Family and Friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday, November 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St., Hanover. Funeral service to follow immediately thereafter. Burial will be at the Hanover Cemetery, Silver St., Hanover, MA.
