Mary Lou Kurtz, 86, of Harlan, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018 at Parkview Hospital. Born February 25, 1932 in Wabash, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Carrie (Trent) Oswalt. A graduate of Wabash High School, she pursued her undergrad at Manchester University and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Ball State Teachers College. She was an elementary school teacher in Huntington and Fort Wayne for many years and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Harlan, for over 40 years. She was very active within her church; helping sew, teaching at the Harlan Christian Youth Center, and an officer with Women of the ELCA. An avid reader, she also enjoyed playing piano and crafting. She is survived by her husband, John C. Kurtz of Harlan; son, Andrew (Kim) Kurtz of Westerville, Ohio; two grandsons, Jackson and Cole Kurtz; sister-in-law, Lois Oswalt of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence Oswalt. Funeral Service will be 11:00am on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Hockemeyer Funeral Home, 17629 SR 37, Harlan, with calling one hour prior. Pastor Amy Beitelschees-Albers officiating. Calling will also be 4-7pm on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial at Harlan Memorial Cemetery, Harlan.
