Peggy Jean Campbell Carter, 86, died March 18, 2017. She was born January 3, 1931, in Iredell County to Ernest and Onie Albea Campbell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ophelia Campbell Gaither; and five brothers: Wilfred, Dwight, Woodrow, Robert Glen and Ernest Campbell. She is survived by her beloved sister, Carolyn Campbell (John Ray) of Harmony. On June 1, 1949, she was married to James Turner Lamberth, who preceded her in death in 1975 after 25 years of marriage. On August 13, 1977, she was married to Edsel Ford Carter, who preceded her in death in 2013. She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Lamberth Liles (Danny) of Statesville, NC, and Kathy Lamberth LeStrange (Raymond) of Winston-Salem, NC; three step-sons, Douglas Carter (Betty Jo) of Charlotte, NC, Rev. Daryl Carter (Sharon) of Midway, NC, and Mark Carter (Beverly) of Stony Point, NC. Peggy is also survived by her grandchildren; Chris Blackwood, Capt. James LeStrange, USMC, Sarah LeStrange; step-grandchildren; Chip Carter, Chad Carter (Monnette), Jeremy Carter, Andrew Carter, Danielle Carter McDaniel (Nick), and Lauren Carter; and great-grandchildren; Turner Blackwood, Avery Carter, and Brady Carter; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Peggy was born and raised in the Harmony community and was a life-long and active member of Harmony United Methodist Church. Peggy retired from Rosewood Assisted Living, where she was devoted to the residents and her work family. Peggy was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend to many. She was a kind and generous soul who enjoyed her family, friends, and Tar Heel basketball.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at Harmony United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 25, 2017. The family will receive friends at the church at 10:00 AM. The service will begin at 11:30 AM, with Rev. Bruce Handy officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Harmony Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that all memorial contributions be made to Harmony United Methodist Church (136 W. Memorial Highway, Harmony, NC 28634) or Gordon Hospice House (2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625) in her memory.
