

He was born September 10, 1925 in Philadelphia; he was the son of the late Norbert and Inez (Tipton) McHugh; and preceded in death by a sister, Clare Kelly; and a brother, Norbert McHugh.
He was a US Army veteran of WWII, served with the 86th Infantry in the Ruhr Pocket; he was wounded on April 13, 1945 near Ludenscheid Germany and awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Following the war, he served in Italy until April 1947.
Gene relied upon the GI Bill and enrolled in LaSalle College-Philadelphia, graduating in Elementary Education in 1951, as the first college graduate in his family. He received a Master’s Degree in School Administration from Temple University.
He served the Philadelphia School District as an Elementary school teacher and Assistant Principal from 1951 through 1963 and was appointed Elementary School Principal in 1963 until his retirement in 1986.
He is a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg.
Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Kathleen T. (Murphy) McHugh; two sons, Eugene N. McHugh, wife, Deborah Reed, of Mechanicsburg and Mark D. McHugh, wife, Tammy, of Leesburg, VA; a daughter, Kathleen M. Pritz, husband, Richard, of Manhattan; grandchildren, Eugene R. McHugh, wife, Ann Hirsch, of Los Angeles, CA, Elizabeth R. McHugh, of Seattle, WA, Andrew McHugh and Cate McHugh, both of Leesburg; step-grandchildren, Nicole Reed Popovich, husband, Eric, of Greensboro, NC and Kristen Reed Penn, husband, Joshua, of Marysville; a brother, Gerald McHugh, of Leesburg, VA; nieces, nephews, godchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, May 11, 2017 at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 1 Peter Dr., Mechanicsburg. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. A viewing will be held from 10:00 AM Thursday until the time of the service at the church.
