

He was born in Rochester, NY, to his parents the late F. Eugene and Margaret E. (Dwyer) Murphy. He was the loving husband of Elaine M. (Decheck) Murphy.
He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Phd. In sociology and served in the U.S. Air Force.
William worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the Dept. of Education. He retired in 2005 with 21 years of service. He was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Parish and a member of the over the hill club.
He loved to read, listen to classical music and work with his trees and shrubs. He had an insatiable hunger to learn. Local trips or extended travel was one of his favorite things to do.
In addition to his loving wife, William is survived by his son Matthew (Jennifer), daughter Lisa and grandsons Nathan and Joshua. Also surviving are three brothers, Dennis, James (Susan) and John (Janice) Murphy.
A mass will be celebrated at 11:00am Thursday Feb 8, at St. Margaret Mary Church; 2800 Paxton Church Road, Harrisburg, PA. A visitation will be held on Wednesday Feb 7, from 6-8pm at the Neill Funeral Home; 3501 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA, and at the church Thursday from 10am until the time of mass.
Burial will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church or Hospice of Central PA.
