He was born April 17, 1939, in Wellman, Iowa, to Lester and Carrie Yoder.
Carroll graduated from Eastern Mennonite College, where he would go on to spend his
academic career, after earning a Ph.D. in French African Literature from the University of Iowa.
Carroll studied, taught, and served abroad, including time with Mennonite Central Committee in
the Democratic Republic of Congo, as a Fulbright Professor in Congo Brazzaville, and leading
EMC/U cross-culturals to Canada, France, and Ivory Coast.
A founding member of Shalom Mennonite Congregation, Carroll was deeply engaged in the life
of the church. His love for travel was only surpassed by his love for people and he formed
lasting relationships in the classroom, his community and around the world.

six grandchildren: Carrie (Jansen Miller), Elliott, Sophia, Bryn, Leah, and Lilly. He is also
survived by his brothers Wilbur, Milford, and Galen, and was preceded in death by his brother
Marcus.
Shalom will hold a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on August 23 at the Eastern Mennonite School
auditorium.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, Akron, PA.
