Obituary of Doris Myers Myers Washington
“Some glad morning when this life is over, I’ll fly away to a home of God’s celestial shore”. Doris M. Washington, 82, of Harrisonburg, VA received her wings and took a flight to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Sentara-RMH. She was born August 5, 1935 in Harrisonburg, VA and was the daughter of the late Mattie E. Myers and Huey P. Jones. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age. She was baptized by Rev. J. O. Wright pastor of the First Baptist Church in Harrisonburg, VA. Doris grew up in Harrisonburg, VA and graduated from Lucy Simms High School. Sis. Washington married Conard Washington, Sr. they united in Holy matrimony on March 29, 1954, he preceded her in death. She was the proud mother of four children, Conard Washington, Jr., Ginette Washington-Brown, Teresa Boyd and Debra Hinton. She also has eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She has a sister, Mary Hayes. Her family she treasured. Doris was a unique woman of strength, inspiration and she was deeply admired by her family and friends not only for her kindness but her courage and dignity. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church where she was the President of the Deaconess Ministry and later became Deaconess Emeritus, Youth Department, Board of Directors for Kids Café, Women Auxiliary of First Baptist Church and Second National Ketoctan Baptist Association Missionary, and Willing Workers. She chaired and served on numerous committees in the church and in the community. Mrs. Washington is a local treasure that embodies the spirit of the Harrisonburg community. She was employed by the Harrisonburg City School system. She was a great role model and a good citizen. She opened her doors to her home to many children throughout the city. Doris has truly been a blessing to a lot of children and adults. She was a true soldier and blessed woman. Sis Washington loves her pastor, Dr. Clarence E. Williams, First Lady Rev. Linda Williams, Rev. Dr. Calvin Baltimore emeritus Pastor of First Baptist Church and her First Baptist Church family, her greatest desire was the First Baptist Church will continue to have a Spirit Filled church. The family is most grateful for the wonderful treatment, care and concern from the people of Sentara-RMH Medical Center. They made every effort to ensure Doris’ quality of life was maintained. She fought the fight, she kept the faith and now she has gone home to God. To cherish her memories are, four children, one son, Conard Washington, Jr. and wife, Pamela, three daughters, Ginette Washington-Brown and husband, Harold Jr., Teresa Boyd and husband, Anthony, and Debra Hinton; one sister, Mary E. Hayes, eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends. A funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church, 611 Broad St., Harrisonburg, VA 22802, on 2:00 pm, Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Interment will be at Newtown Cemetery. Repass will follow at First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, prior to the service.
