

He was born February 6, 1927 in Harrisonburg and was the son of the late Dr. Noland M. Canter, Sr. and Mary Virginia Yancey Canter.
Harry was a 1944 graduate of Harrisonburg High School; he graduated in 1949 from Randolph Macon College and went to Grad School at University of Virginia.
On July 16, 1949, he married the former, Floride Fitchett, who survives; they were married for 67 years. Harry and his wife lived in Bethesda, MD, and moved back to the Harrisonburg area nine years ago. He was a member of Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, where he was a clerk of session and an elder. He was also very active with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed his work at NIH, National Cancer Institute as a researcher for 40 plus years.
Harry was a loving, caring father, husband and pet owner.
He is also survived by his children, Dr. Harry Yancey Canter, Jr. and wife, Karen, of Easton, MD, Mary Susan Canter of Harrisonburg and Dr. John Walter Fitchett Canter and wife, Nancy, of Harrisonburg; his grandchildren, Laura, Julie, Nolan, Walter and William Canter; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Canter of Harrisonburg, and Martha Canter of Midlothian, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. Noland M. Canter, Jr. and Dr. Hall Gibbons Canter; and a daughter-in-law, Deborah Canter.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Meredith Chapel at Sunnyside with Rev. Paul O’Gorek officiating. A private graveside service will be held earlier in the day.
