Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who, in his earlier years, enjoyed painting, golf and travel. In later years, he enjoyed his grandchildren and watched them grow into adults.
As a young man, Dick joined the Navy. He advanced to naval pilot instructor in the late 1940’s and for most of his naval career was a helicopter pilot. His Pacific tour of duty cruise was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton. Following his time in the Navy, Dick utilized his electronics knowledge to be employed by the federal government as a Technical Writer. Most of his adult life was spent in Wall Township, NJ where he raised his family before retiring with his wife Helen to Harrisonburg in 1990.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Helen Cramer. He is survived by his children and spouses, Donald and Eileen Cramer of Clinton, CT, Richard Jr. and Mary-Catherine Cramer of Asheville, NC and Pat and Garland Kinzie of Mount Crawford, six grandchildren and their spouses Danielle and Vashon King, Aaron Cramer, Brian Cramer, Richard Cramer, III and Beth Cramer, Kevin and Missy Cramer and Kyle Cramer; five great-grandchildren, Isaac King, Gabriella King, Jonah King, Hannah Cramer and a great-grandchild soon to be born and named.
The family wishes to thank Dr. George Roussel and Dr. Lincoln Louck for their long term and compassionate care of Dick. They would also like to express their grateful appreciation for the special attention he received from Denise Hazzard and several other caregivers.
