Ruth “Peggie” Shelor Shorb Rusmisel, 98, a resident of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Bridgewater Retirement Community. She was the last member of her immediate family.
She was born on November 21, 1926, in Roanoke and was the daughter of the late Samuel Louis and Ruth Virginia Brown Shelor.
Before retiring, Peggie held many positions, she was a secretary for Lindsey Funeral Homes, Miller and Rhoads Department Store in Richmond, and receptionist for Dominion Oxygen Supply in Ashland. She was a member of the Dayton Church of the Brethren and was a Sunday school teacher and former board member. She was involved in many community clubs and organizations including, President of Longdale Women’s Club, Glen Allen, Va, Vice President of Hanover Extension Club, Ashland, VA, President of Sycamore Tavern Extension Club, President of Riverside Extension Club. She also volunteered at Sunnyside, Bridgewater Home, Woodland Home for Adults and Bridgewater Fire Department. Peggie enjoyed cooking and sewing, she was also fond of serving quietly.
Peggie was married twice on August 19, 1944, she married Sterling L. Shorb, who preceded her on January 2, 1989. On March 31, 1991, she married, Bobbie S. Rusmisel, who preceded her in death on June 29, 2023.
She is survived by her children, Sterling “Jerry” Shorb (Carolyn) of Bridgewater, Stephanie Shorb Hamm of Ashland, Don Rusmisel of Bridgewater, James Rusmisel of Harrisonburg, Linda Magalis of McGaheysville and Dale Rusmisel of Harrisonburg; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Stuart Hamm; and her siblings, Betty Lee Atkins, Barbara Jones, Geraldine S. Wheeler, Beverly M. Shelor, Joyce Ann Myers and Lewis Shelor.
Honoring her wishes, she will be cremated, and a celebration of life service will be held at Bridgewater Home, Lantz Chapel, 1 pm, Saturday, June 21, 2025, with Chaplain Russ Barb officiating. Private Inurnment will be in Mt. Horeb Cemetery.
