Wanda Newman Whitmore

Wanda was born on May 20, 1926 in Highland County and was the daughter of the late Ralph S. and Anna Wimer Newman.

She graduated from Monterey High School and moved from Monterey to Harrisonburg in 1945. She had been employed for a short time at Rocco and JMU; she was an assistant Girl Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher at Asbury United Methodist Church where she was a member.

In 1948, she married Durwood E. Whitmore, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Debra W. Fraser and husband, Dan of Broadway, JoAnn W. Price of Manakin-Sabot; a grandson, Tony E. Tallent and wife, Jeannie Marie of Front Royal; a great-granddaughter, Mara Alexis Tallent; two brothers, Rev. M. Douglas Newman and wife, Phyllis of Newport News, Dale E. Newman and wife, Clarissa of Elkton; a sister, Jeanette Bontz and husband, Frank of Harrisonburg; a sister-in-law, Tillie Newman of Harrisonburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph S. Newman, Jr.

Mrs. Whitmore will be cremated at Lindsey Funeral Homes and Crematory in Harrisonburg.

A graveside service for family and friends will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, May 28, 2012 at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
