

Retired Police Captain Leander Terence Mathews Sr. was born May 20, 1964, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Larry James Smith and Louise Mathews Weatherton.
Leander was educated in the Sibley Independent School District and was a proud graduate of the Sibley High School class of 1982. Sergeant Leander Terence Mathews joined the United States Army in June 1982. He served until being honorably discharged in July 1992. On July 13, 1993, Leander was appointed to the Bossier City Police Department, where he served as a Patrolman. His unique ability to work under pressure, maintain his integrity, and have sound moral judgment, combined with his genuine love and care for people from all walks of life, allowed him to thrive as a Police Officer and navigate the challenges of the job. Leander served in various roles in the Bossier City Police Department such as Street Crimes Division and Criminal Investigations, before retiring as Police Captain in July 2022. After retiring from the Bossier City Police Department, Leander began working with the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Department as a School Resource Officer. In this role, he positively impacted the youth in the community by listening and speaking effectively to gain their trust. Leander treated everyone that he encountered with dignity and respect.
His interest included spending time with his children, family, and friends. Leander was an outdoor enthusiast and an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed attending church, watching movies, and working in the yard.
Leander leaves to cherish his precious memories; his devoted wife Denise Mathews, Leander Mathews Jr. (Son), Kierstyn Mathews (Daughter), Ondre Brown Jr. (Stepson), Kendryx Brown (Grandson), Louise Weatherton (Mother), Christopher Weatherton (Brother), Tangee Weatherton (Sister), Khristina Weatherton (Niece), McKinsley Weatherton( Niece), and a host of colleagues and friends.
Leander is preceded in death by his Father, Larry James Smith and Dock Weatherton (Step-Father).
Services in his honor will begin with a gathering of family and friends between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, Friday July 12, 2024 at Hill Crest Memorial in Haughton, LA. The Celebration of Life will be 11:00 am, Saturday July 13, 2024, at First Bossier in Bossier City. Interment will follow at Hill Crest Memorial Cemetery.
