Margaret Fowler Covington was born on October 16, 1930 at the Tri-State Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. She passed into the arms of Our Lord Jesus Christ on August 21, 2021 just prior to her 91st birthday. She moved to Haughton in 1958, where she spent the remainder of her life, happy and safe. Margie attended Centenary College and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1962. She received her Master’s Degree + 30 in education from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She began her 31 year teaching career at a newly opened Platt Elementary in 1962 to teach the 5th grade. She went on to help establish a new concept school in Bossier called Apollo Elementary. Margie then went on to spend the remainder of her teaching career as a coordinator helping teachers in Bossier Parish to improve their skills. She was also a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Honor Sorority.
Upon arriving in Haughton, Margie joined the Haughton Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member for the rest of her life. As was her love for teaching, she taught Sunday school for many, many years. Her faith and commitment to Jesus Christ was the foundation of everything she did her entire life. She loved the Lord, she loved to talk about the Lord and she lived her life within the teachings of the Bible. If you were around her for only a short time, you knew how devoted she was to the Lord. As teaching was her calling, every day was a lesson for us at home on how we were expected to live our lives and what was important and not so important. Some of the lessons took time to stick, but most eventually did.
Margaret was preceded in death by her father, George W. Fowler; her mother and step-father, Mildred and Jack Van Voorhis, and her sister, Gloria Jean Ramsey. Left to cherish her memory are her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenny and Debbie Covington, Mike and Robee Covington; grandchildren, Caitlin, Michael and Catheryn Margaret Covington; and sister, Carolyn Logan.
The family would like to thank the doctors and caregivers at Garden Park for taking care of our mother until her passing. We would especially like to thank Virginia Player, who came into our lives at the right time to assist with our mother in her final years. Miss Virginia was more than a caregiver, she became a part of our family that we love dearly.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at First Baptist Church Haughton. Interment will follow at Hill Crest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be the McCormick's Men's Life Group of First Baptist Haughton.
In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial to our mom to Samaritan’s Purse, (Franklin Graham’s ministry). It was one of mother’s favorite for many years.
“To teach is to touch a life.” Our mother touched many, many lives.
