Robert (Bob) Coy Zirkle, 93 passed away on Monday February 10, 2025, peacefully in the evening. He was born December 2, 1931, in Knoxville, Tennessee to Albert & Iona Zirkle. Dad graduated high school and at the age of 17, with the permission of his mother joined the US Air Force. Where he proudly served until his retirement. Traveling the world on top secret missions of intelligence review. While being stationed in Texas, he met the love of his life Edna Margaret Zirkle, and they married May 1953. They loved each other beyond measure and were together until her passing in June 2023. In, February 1967, they welcomed their only son Michael Chad Zirkle. They continued to make their life in Haughton, and Dad took a job with the US Post Office, where he was the Head of Logistics, until his retirement.
Bob (or Coy if you were family from Tennessee) was devoted to his Catholic faith. He gave many years of service to Christ the King Catholic Church in many different areas. He was also a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, where he was so happy to put together Bingo packets for years. He was also a member of the American Legion. He was very proud of his service to our country.
Dad loved all people. He enjoyed traveling with Mom in their fifth wheel. Loved a cold beer on his patio, watching the birds and the squirrels. He was a great fried fish, smoked meat and boiled shrimp cook. His wit was exceptional sharp. He always made people laugh, had the best stories. He loved tinkering on projects, watching westerns, and during the last year his greatest source of happiness was mowing grass on his John Deere(under supervision of Shannon which he didn’t always listen ), and spending time with his grand dogs Ruby and Nola Grace.
Bob was preceded in death, by loving wife Edna Zirkle, and their only son Michael Zirkle. Dad is survived by his daughter Shannon Zirkle, Bossier City. his sister Patricia Wells, Knoxville TN, and his special nephew Stephen Zirkle, Knoxville TN. Along with numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and God Children.
It sometimes takes a village to make things run smoothly, and he was very blessed to have a solid circle of people. He had the best neighbors, who were like family. Always there to lend a hand when needed and checking in to see how he was doing. I would like to express sincere thanks to Ruth Burks, La Quisha Burks and Sherry Harris who were dad’s daily caregivers. Having caregivers, that genuinely love and care about the person they are taking care of is important. And these ladies looked out for him and his health. Especially Ruth, who when things were going on, she was the first to raise the flag of concern and made sure someone heard and listened to her. Special thanks to Roxie Kennon who kept 136 Platt, always clean and fresh. Mr. Ricky Buchannan, who took care of special projects to make access easier for Dad. Mr. Fontenot who would come and visit with him and give him communion when he was unable to make it to Saturday Mass. Father Fidel who would visit with him, share great stories, reinforcing his faith, and the night of his passing being there when I called. And of course, Vickie Davis who was also like another daughter to him. She picked him up more than once when being discharged from the hospital. He loved watching her mow grass, as she loved it as much as he did.
Services will be held Monday, February 17, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Bossier City LA. Visitation will be from 12pm-1pm with Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus. Funeral Mass will start at 1pm led by Monsignor Provenza. Burial will follow at Hill Crest Cemetery in Haughton, LA.
