She was born to Dr. Carl D. Cason and Katherine M. Cason and spent most of her childhood growing up in Wagoner, Oklahoma. Growing up as a “tom boy,” she enjoyed a childhood full of adventures and escapades with her three brothers and sister. She was so very proud of her Cherokee heritage, growing up in eastern Oklahoma. After graduating from Okay High School, she followed her older brother David to Oklahoma State University where she met the love of her life Eddie Lorane Moore. She graduated from OSU with a degree in Home Economics and spent a short time teaching in Yale, Oklahoma. In 1983, with a new baby in tow, she and Eddie moved to Haughton, Louisiana, where she made her home for the next 38 years. Shortly after moving to Haughton, she and Eddie joined Love Chapel United Methodist Church, now Legacy UMC where she was an active member, assisting on numerous committees and serving in many leadership roles in the United Methodist Women. Her son Roy was born in 1982, and her daughter Makensie was born in 1986. It was important to Shawn that both of her children be raised in the church.
Shawn was a creative cook and liked nothing better than having a table full of friends and family sharing a meal she lovingly prepared. She often inquired about the different types of food people enjoyed and then prepared it for them. Her attention to detail made her desserts truly works of art that were as tasty to eat as they were lovely to see. She won many awards for her delectable pies and other delicious dishes at the Louisiana State Fair and other cooking contests. Some of her favorite people to cook for in recent years were her friends at Hope House in Shreveport. She had a servant’s heart, and Hope House held a special place in it. She was also classified as a master gardener and was an active member of the Cypress Garden Club. She enjoyed spending time working outdoors; the favorite part of her garden was the strawberry patch she made for her grandkids to enjoy.
Shawn loved to watch things grow whether it be her flowers, her friendships, or her family. Some of her favorite things were the beach, Elvis, hosting baby showers, and enjoying dinners and trips with friends. She made friends easily and was a faithful and devoted friend to many. Her most beloved possession was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and Grandma, and loved her grandchildren most of all.
Shawn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Dr. David Cason, and her nephew Buck Cason. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Dr. Eddie Lorane Moore; son Roy Cason Moore and wife Carly; her daughter Dr. Makensie Ruth Moore Sonnier and husband BJ; grandchildren: Ruth Annalyn Sonnier, Belton Joseph Sonnier IV, Cypress Elayne Moore, Aaron Roy Moore, and Prairie Makensie Moore, for whom she fought valiantly to be able to meet. She is also survived by her brother Dr. Daniel Cason; brother Jimmy Cason and wife, Carola; sister Karen Jones and husband Brian and her very special friend Linda Gilmore and family. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at Willis Knighton, Ochsner Shreveport, and St. Joseph’s Hospice for being fierce allies in her heroic battle against cancer.
