Don Ehrhardt, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Hemet, California, on January 20, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. He was 86 years old. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Nancy; his son, Mark; his daughter, Deanna; several grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is preceded in passing by his dear daughter, Sandi, who passed away in 2022.
Born on June 24, 1938, in Orange, California, Don developed a passion for fast cars and motorcycles at an early age. Even as a young boy, he possessed a strong work ethic, taking on his first job at Littleton Dairy in San Bernardino, in addition to delivering newspapers and mowing lawns in his neighborhood. He diligently saved money until, at just 15 years old, he was able to purchase his first motorcycle. His love for racing quickly followed at the age of 16, igniting a lifelong passion that would remain with him for years to come. As he grew older, he worked at Les Carlson Lawn Mower & Key Shop in San Bernardino.
On December 7, 1968, Don married the love of his life, Nancy. Together, they built a beautiful life, filled with adventure, dedication, and unwavering love. In 1969, they moved to Hemet, California, where Don began his distinguished career as a firefighter for the city. A man of integrity and hard work, he was deeply committed to serving his community, ultimately rising to the rank of Fire Captain. Well-respected by his colleagues and known for his bravery, leadership, and dedication, Don served honorably for 34 years before retiring in 2003.
When he wasn’t on duty, Don could often be found on the open road, riding his Harley alongside Nancy. Their travels took them across the country, from California to South Dakota, embracing the freedom and thrill of the ride. For Don, motorcycling was not just a pastime—it was a way of life.
Retirement did not slow Don down; instead, it gave him even more time to pursue the things he loved. Whether riding his mountain bike, traveling in his fifth-wheel with Nancy, or simply eating a Klondike bar while enjoying quality time with his grandchildren, Don remained as active and engaged as ever.
Above all else, Don was a devoted family man. He played an integral role in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives, always present, always supportive. Whether working on his son’s motorcycles, attending his son's races, saddling up horses for his daughters, tending to their property on his tractor, or even waging battles against the gophers in his yard, Don embraced every moment with enthusiasm and love.
As a grandfather, he was deeply involved, never missing a sporting event, recital, or special occasion. His wisdom and life lessons left a lasting impact on his grandchildren, who treasured his stories from his youth and his deep knowledge of history. Even today, they fondly recall the lessons he shared, carrying his words and teachings in their hearts. Don was always hands-on, ensuring his children and grandchildren experienced a life filled with adventure and love.
Don’s legacy is one of love, dedication, adventure, and unwavering commitment to family. He was a man who lived life to the fullest, embracing every challenge with determination and every joy with gratitude. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
