

Edith Freitas, age 90, passed away in her sleep, on Tuesday, December 12th, 2017 at Plaza Village Memory Care in National City, California. Edith was born to Alwyn Eggelston and Clara Faye Bennet on Oct 10, 1927, in Claresholm, Alberta Canada. She was the last surviving sibling of 9 children. In 1950 the family moved to the United States and settled in New Mexico. At some point the family moved to Encinitas, California. She attended Azusa Pacific College where she met Russell Gerber. Edith and Russell were married July 9, 1950, in National City. Russell graduated in 1951. He joined the faculty at the Instituto Biblico Nazareno, San Antonio, Texas. Janice Lynn Gerber was born in 1952, in San Antonio, Texas. The family moved to Azusa, California. David Russell and Donna Ruth Gerber, were born on 11/11/1955, in Covina, California.
Russell later worked as a Carpenter for Melhorn Construction in San Diego. When the three children were in school, Edith pursued a career in Nursing. She received a license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Most of her career as a nurse was at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California.
Russell passed away, August, 4 1987. Edith moved to Hemet, California where she met and married Monte Freitas.
Due to failing health, in 2009, the children moved Edith to an Assisted Living facility in San Diego, to be near her son David. When she required memory care, in 2016, she was moved to Plaza Village, in National City.
She is survived by her three adult children, Janice Gerber Perry, living in Bodega Bay, California; David Russell Gerber, living in El Cajon, California; Dona Marrah, living in Kirkland, Washington and three grandchildren, Michelle Garcia, Brent Marrah and David Michael Gerber, and two great grandchildren, Ana Victoria Garcia, and Lyric Marie Gerber.
