

Lt. Col. John "Jack" S. Garrett was born on Wednesday, August 26, 1925 in Cedar, Iowa to the late Clark and Cora Garrett. Jack grew up on a farm in Ferguson, Iowa and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. After WWII the Air Corps became the Air Force and Jack quickly rose in the ranks to become an officer, a pilot and a flight instructor, flying almost every type of aircraft. He served in three wars: World War II, the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam as well as being stationed at important posts all over the world. In 1969 he and his family moved to the High Desert, stationed at George Air Force Base as Commander of the 480 Tactical Fighter Wing. He retired in 1972 after 29 years in the military. Not slowed by retirement, he re-entered college and received a Master's Degree in Business and a Masters in City Planning. He was an instructor at Chapman College in the 1980s and became first the City Planner then a City Administrator of Adelanto, CA. In 1989 he retired again and permanently pursued his hobbies and love of golf, hunting, fishing and attending almost every air show held in Southern California. He continued traveling, visiting friends and relatives all over the United States. On Monday, October 10th, 2011 at the age of 86, John passed away in San Bernardino, Ca.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Lena, whom passed in 2004.
He is survived by his three sons; John Garrett Jr., William Garrett and Clark Garrett, two daughters; Jacquelyn Allan and Deborah Murphy, brother; Robert Garrett, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a host of family and friends. "Jack" will truly be missed by all.
