

Lloyd A. Carter, 96 of Hemet, CA, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2017 at his residence in Hemet, CA. He was born on April 15, 1921 in the Hamlet of West Pelly, Saskatchewan, Canada to the late Edwin John Carter and Elizabeth Alice Carter and was raised in Huntsville and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He served overseas as a Staff Sergeant with the First Canadian Infantry Division during World War II in Italy and Holland.
Lloyd's parents immigrated to Canada from England in 1904 and secured a homestead in Saskatchewan in 1908.
The last of six children, Lloyd was born, April 15, 1921 at the Hamlet of West Pelly, Saskatchewan.
When Lloyd was only about five months old, the family moved to Huntsville, Ontario, where they lived until he was about five years old.
The next move was to Toronto, where Lloyd received his basic, and some advanced education.
He volunteered for service in the Canadian army during World War II and served for three years and two months, of which two years was overseas. He served with the 1st Canadian Infantry Division in Italy for more than a year, then Holland until the end of the war, with the rank of Armament Staff Sergeant.
Prior to going overseas, Lloyd married Bertha Olive Wiseman (now deceased), his beloved wife for more than 64 years.
After the war, Lloyd continued his studies. He worked as a journeyman Tool & Die Maker at the General Electric Company until 1953, then as an Estimator for I.B.M.. After two years in that capacity, he began work as a Junior Industrial Engineer for Johns Manville Corporation.
While attending Ryerson Institute at Toronto, Lloyd won first prize in "Die Design" from the American Society of Tool Engineers.
He was a devoted member of Donlands United Church of Canada.
He was a member of the Canadian Legion and was Scoutmaster of the 5th West Hill Scout Group for three years.
Transferring to employment at Long Beach Plant of Johns Manville Corporation in 1964, Lloyd was promoted to Senior Industrial Engineer and became a registered Professional Industrial Engineer as of July, 1970.
Lloyd's beloved wife, Bertha, was employed with the YWCA in Long Beach.
He was a volunteer with the YWCA and Red Cross in the 70's, and helped to scrub and shower Vietnamese children upon arrival in California. In 1978, Christmas morning, he was Santa Claus to the children of troubled women at the Emergency House provided by the YWCA of Long Beach.
Lloyd lived in California since 1964, and became a citizen of the U.S.A. He was employed by Johns Manville in Canada and the United States for a total of 27 years as an Industrial Engineer.
Lloyd is predeceased by his dearly beloved wife of 64 years, Bertha O. Carter (Wiseman). He is survived by their daughter, Carol Duncan if Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada; son Robert Carter of California; five grandchildren; Christopher, Gregory and Donald in Canada, Jennifer and Jared in California; plus great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Samantha, Gregory, Jr. and William in Canada, plus Leo, Dylan, Mason and Caitlin in California.
Lloyd was on the Dean's List at Long Beach City College in 1981, with the special notation of "Great Distinction" in recognition of a 4.0 grade point average and academic excellence during the previous semester.
Upon retirement in January, 1983, Lloyd and Bertha moved to Big River, a retirement Community situated on the California side of the Colorado River. They immediately became active as volunteers. During the formation of the Big River Community Services District, Lloyd put together the cost estimates for the initial community assessment.
He was also a volunteer driver of the van for the Senior Center, taking those in need to appointments at hospitals, out-of-town, etc.
Lloyd had a Life Membership in the American Legion, and was Commander of Post #466 before moving to Hemet late in 1992.
He loved classical music, and popular music of the 30's and 40's. He loved the bush country and fishing. He loved to dance, especially with his beloved Bertha.
Later in life, he became a member of the Moose Lodge and supported Moose charities.
In addition, he occasionally gave to the Food Pantry in Hemet and other charities.
For over two years, he was a volunteer BINGO caller at Manor Care nursing facility.
Lloyd had great love for his family and his beloved Bertha, and gave thanks every day for the life and love they shared. He believed in a lesson his father taught him: that "service is its own reward."
Lloyd is predeceases by his dearly beloved wife of 64 years, Bertha O. Carter ( Wiseman). He is survived by their daughter , Carol Duncan of Wasaga Beach, Ontario Canada; son, Robert Carter, California; five grandchildren; Christopher, Gregory and Donald in Canada, Jennifer and Jared in California; plus great grandchildren, Katheryn , Samantha, Gregory Jr., and William , in Canada, plus Leo, Dylan, Mason, and Caitlin in California.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Miller-Jones Hemet Mortuary, 1501 W Florida Ave , Hemet, California . A Funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM on Thursday at Miller-Jones Hemet Mortuary followed by a graveside service at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery, San Jacinto, CA.
