Passed away at Menifee Valley Medical Center on May 7, 2016. She would have been 93 in July. Born in Venice, Ohio on July 25, 1923 to Harriet Meggitt and Charles J. Chill, Mary had two older brothers, Vernon and Robert.
Due to difficult family circumstances, she was adopted in Sandusky, in 1937 at almost 14 by her mother's oldest sister, Mary Lavina Meggitt and husband Rolla J. Shellhorn, a juvenile probation officer in Erie County. Mary had to be very good! She always loved the Lord!
After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1941, Mary worked in a munitions plant during the summer to help the war effort. She also spent a year with the Ohio Public Service Company in Sandusky as a PBX Operator before studying teaching at Capital University in Bexley, graduating in 1945.
By then, Mary had become engaged to Carl E. Hacker, a Divinity student and 'BMOC!' They were married in the campus chapel on May 25, 1946 and raised three children, Dianne, John and Paul, in Ohio, Texas, Maryland, Arizona and California. She is survived by her oldest son, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren in California and Arizona.
Mary was a hard-working teacher with a California life credential, an administrator, pastor's wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother over some 70 years. She was also a Stephen care minister, bible-study leader and mentor to many other acquaintances during the interim. Mary enjoyed cooking, sewing, decorating, gardening and dinning with family and friends. She was very hospitable!
As a fighter who overcame innumerous conflicts with unending verve and determination, Mary's life story is an endearing tribute to the tenacity of the human spirit. She will be missed by all who witnessed her gentle, caring soul. God Bless Mary!
