Maurice Peatros, 90, of San Jacinto, CA entered eternal rest on June 25, 2017. He was born May 22, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late True Heart Peatros and Azalee (Walker) Peatros and younger brother William. He was married for 63 years and 9 months to Barbara Lee (Williams) Peatros.
Maurice attended Westinghouse High School and while a youngster of 16 he joined the Negro League Baseball organization with the consent of his father. He signed his first professional contract in 1944 with the Pittsburgh Crawfords. In 1946, he served briefly in the U.S. Army Air Force as a physical training instructor at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Upon returning from the Academy "Pete/Baby Face" was recruited by the Homestead Grays and was relief for Buck Leonard. When the Negro League disbanded Maurice went on to play baseball in Quebec, Canada in 1948 as well as pro-football and hockey for over two years. Pete also played baseball in Mexico and for the Brooklyn Dodgers Organization. He retired in 1954 to start a business in Pittsburgh and began the next chapter in his life as husband and dad. Upon moving to Michigan he worked for the State for over 37 years. He headed up different departments within the State of Michigan and retired to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Family was very important to him and he was the perfect father. He was so proud of his 5 children, Risa, Carlyle, Anthony, Mira and Vincent. Still an athlete he spent quite a bit of time coaching local teams and training his children in different sports, from chess and tennis to football and basketball. He even played ball for a local city team, the Cardinals for "fun". But some of his most cherished moments were times he spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, from the cheerleaders to star football, baseball and basketball players. His gene for greatness has been passed down to the next generations.
He shared his wisdom with all the family and everyone would love to hear his wonderful stories and sage advice. He had a beautiful spirit and was a wonderful man.
Maurice deeply touched everyone he met, he never knew a stranger. He will be greatly missed and left a wonderful footprint and legacy on this earth.
