Sylvia Lopez, age 97, of Hemet, California passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2025, surrounded by her children. Sylvia was born in Bernalillo, New Mexico. She was the daughter of the late Pedro Torres and the late Julia (Peña) Torres. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Frances Silva, her brother's Steve Torres, George Torres and sister Pricilla Alderette.
She is survived by her children, Gloria McFarland, Gilbert Lopez, Helen Cota and Martha Weaver, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Sylvia moved from New Mexico to Los Angeles, California with her sister when she was about 15 years old, to find work and send money home. She married Nacho Lopez when she was about 22 years old. At 36, Nacho and Sylvia bought a home in Whittier where they raised 5 children. Sylvia was widowed when she was about 49. She remained in the house, working, raising her children and eventually paying off the mortgage and clearing all outstanding debt on her own. She remained in her home until she was about 62, at which time she sold the house and moved to Hemet, California where she remained until her passing.
A visitation for Sylvia will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at McWane Family Funeral Home, 350 N San Jacinto St., Hemet, CA 92543.
