Wallace was raised in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles, and was a loyal 1938 graduate of Belmont High School. In later years he organized several Belmont alumni events. In high school he was active in the Boy Scouts. One of his fondest memories was attending the 1937 Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington DC with his father and brother Larry. He was also active in the Woodcraft Rangers, and later worked as a camp counselor for that organization. He retired as Executive Director of Navy Relief in 1982, and was honored by the Marines with a formal retirement ceremony, a highlight of his working life. He and Nina were avid square dancers, and loved traveling in their trailer all over the country.
In his later years, Wallace was involved in various clubs in the Hemet area. He was a member of the San Jacinto Railroad Club, the Square Dance Roamers, and in Orange County he was a member of the Camping Squares. Wallace was a devout Methodist and was honored as a lifetime member of Methodist Men in 2010.
