(May 13, 1918 -- August 18, 2012)
Survived by her daughter, Diana G. Rogers and son Edward Goldberg,
four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Determined, goal oriented, daughter of immigrants from Lipcha, a small town in Hungary, later Czechoslovakia and now part of the Ukraine. Her parents, Joseph Meyerowitz and Ethel Berkowitz, instilled her with solid values and a sense of prudence. Raised in Newark, New Jersey along with her younger brother Bernhard, they were all part of a vibrant Jewish community.
She told the story of how she saw a handsome young man while looking from her living room window. As he walked into the kosher butcher store across the street she decided that he was to be her husband. As mentioned up front, determined and goal oriented, she made that goal a fact in 1940 when she married Alexander Goldberg.
Florence raised three children navigating a host of changes from a beginning in Newark, New Jersey, then to Connecticut, back to Newark and then to Hempstead, New York. In the mid 1950s, Florence moved the entire household to southern France where Al had accepted a position as a representative for a major aeronautical company. Florence somehow managed to step up to that challenge guiding her two teenage daughters and preteen son to life in a foreign land.
Florence always seemed to find time to further her education. She took courses in photography, archeology, pottery, sculpture and more. She was very proud when she received her degree in accounting after so many years of being a bookkeeper she was now an accountant.
Florence was actively involved in her neighborhood association. She had a great interest in her local and religious community. She was never satisfied just to be a member but instead relished being involved. She was the first female president of Congregation Beth Israel in Hempstead. She was a member of the choir and an officer in Sisterhood. Also she served as a volunteer for many years at VFI (Volunteers for Israel) keeping the books and making many trips to Israel helping provide relief for army personnel.
Florence was indeed a warm, intelligent, involved wife to Al, nurturing Mother to her three children and a dear friend to so very many.
We shall all miss her.
