Bette (Nichols) Niedringhaus (84) passed away peacefully on February 23, 2019 in Henderson, Nevada from pancreatic cancer. She was a loving wife for 50 years to her husband Thomas, a great mom to her sons William and Michael and caring grandmother to her three grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel and Sarah.
Bette was born on January 17, 1935 and raised in Boyne City Michigan where she attended Boyne City High School. She was an excellent student and graduated in 1953 as the class valedictorian. She attended Michigan State University, graduating with Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1957. At Michigan State, Bette met her lifelong love, Thomas, and they wed in 1960. Bette continued living in Lansing after college and began raising two boys while Thomas finished his doctorate degree at Michigan State. In 1964, Bette and family moved to North Carolina and then Massachusetts where she worked part-time as a teacher and focused on raising her family. She was a great mother who loved gardening, sewing clothes for the family and reading. She, along with her husband, was also an avid bridge player and bowler.
In 1972 Bette and family settled in Springfield, Virginia (near Washington D.C) where they lived for the next 21 years. She worked as an accounting assistant at a local CPA firm, Bearden and Co, for 20 years until she retired to live in Henderson, Nevada in 1993. She loved life in Nevada and especially enjoyed playing bingo with her many new friends and bowling in a local women’s league. She loved to travel, particularly cruises, including those to China, Australia, Russia, and Europe.
She is survived by her son Michael, and his wife Mary; three grandchildren: Andrew, Daniel and Sarah; her sister Arletta (Dolly) Anderson and her husband Ken; and two brothers, Robert and Carl Nichols. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas, son William, her parents Rudolph and Edna Nichols, sister Dorothy and brother Rudolph (Sonny).
Bette was a sweet lady who was well liked for her honesty and for treating all people with kindness and respect. She will be missed by family, friends and the residents and staff at the Prestige Assisted Living Center where she lived her last 3 years. A memorial in her honor to celebrate her life and for her internment will be at the Palm Boulder Highway Mortuary and Cemetery in Henderson, NV. in May 2019 (exact date TBD).
