January 5, 1981. He graduated from North Springs High (Sandy Springs, Georgia) and received a
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology- he was a
true Ramblin’ Wreck.
A multi-talented and gifted musician, he excelled as an electric guitarist and most recently took up
drums. Travel fed his curiosity and sense of adventure, while he also loved good wine, bourbon, and
a great steak. James had an old soul, wicked sense of humor, quick wit and was deeply adored and
loved by his family and friends.
James was a committed San Francisco 49er fan and sports enthusiast, who considered it fighting
words if you were brave enough to root against him. He loved his brother, Brad, and included him in
his many adventures along with a wealth of friends and family.
Professionally, James was at the height of his career at Michael Baker International in his role as
Vice President- Regional Practice Lead for design build. He brought more than 15 years of
experience in heavy civil infrastructure construction, including large-scale utilities, roadways,
concrete paving, retaining walls, and bridges. Most recently, he was a Design Manager with Flatiron,
where he was responsible for coordination and design management of all lead engineering firms in
the Southwest. Previously, he was a Project Manager with New-Com, the consolidated parent
company of TAB Contractors, MMC, Acme Electric, and Biodiesel of Las Vegas. Earlier in his career,
he served as Design Manager and Project Manager at Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.
He is survived by his parents, Michele Murphy and Jim Murphy; his brother, Bradley Murphy;
grandparents, Michael and Sharon Cortez; and extended family members, including aunts, uncles,
and cousins. We will all push on as James turns it up real loud and kicks out the jams in heaven.
In lieu of flowers James' family ask that a donation be made to Georgia Tech in his name.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 11 at 12:00 pm. Funeral service to follow at 1:00 both at Palm Henderson Mortuary 800 S. Boulder Highway Henderson, NV 89015.
