ArraSylvia P. Mache, 99, of Miami, FL was born on November 4, 1914 in Kingston, Jamaica to Marian Pitter and Fung Fung. At the age of 3, she and her mother moved to Antilla Oriente, Cuba where she was home schooled by her mother, who also taught her to sew. Sylvia left Cuba for New York City, in April 1949, where she met and married the love of her life “Mongo” Mache on September 6, 1957; they enjoyed 38 years together. The couple never would have any biological children, but they would still go on to be parents to Gladys Mitchell. Mongo, preceded Sylvia in death, however, she often spoke of the exceptional bond and the wonderful life they shared together.
Sylvia worked as a licensed Cosmetologist, but after a few short years, she decided to take the sewing craft taught by her mother and turn it into a career. She worked as a Seamstress until retirement in 1987. Sylvia was a lively personality with a reputation for being witty and humorous. In her spare time, Sylvia enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and gardening. Sylvia’s gardening reflected her love for plants, vegetables, and fruits as she cultivated orchids, bananas, cassava, guava, sweet potatoes, and yucca. Sylvia especially enjoyed caring for her numerous pets including an unforgettable parrot named Pinky.
