

HICKORY----Ed Mathis, 87, passed away January 19, 2016 at Catawba Regional Hospice after a brief illness. Ed was born February 7, 1928 in Yancey Co. to the late Roy Lee and Eva Belle McIntosh Mathis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Weaver Mathis; brothers, Ward Wesley Mathis, Cedric “Junior” Mathis, Wayne Mathis and infant Billy Mathis; sisters, Jewel Penland, Little Maude Mathis and Minnie Mae Mathis.
Ed served in the U. S. Army, worked at Hills Café, Try- One Sandwich, Catawba Valley Coin Catering and part time for Arcade Pool Room and retired as a watchman for Technibilt. Surviving is his sons, Ted Lee Mathis and wife, Debra of Conover and Charles Mathis and wife, Karen of Hickory; grandson, Chuck Mathis of Hickory; granddaughter, Katie Mathis of Conover; brother, Ted Mathis and wife, Angie of Asheville; sisters, Marie Ferguson of Jonesboro, TN, Mary Robinson of Burnsville, Louise Young of Burnsville and Hanna Neighbors of Hamlet. Services will be Monday, January 25, 2016, at 1:00 P. M. at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Robison. Interment will follow in Catawba Memorial Park.
