

Gladys Elizabeth Johnson Knuckles passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Trinity Village in Hickory, NC, where she has lived for almost two years. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Burse, “CB” Knuckles of Atlanta, GA. Gladys (Granny Gladys, Big Mama) is survived by three children and their spouses, Mark and Joy Knuckles of Hickory, NC, Rev. Alan and Helen Knuckles of DeRidder, LA and Brian and Michelle Knuckles of Wetumpka, AL. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, John Knuckles and wife Sandra of Boone, NC, James Knuckles and wife Heather of Hickory, David Knuckles and wife Amy of Crowley, LA, Sara Iles and husband Terry of Wake Forest, NC, Brittany Knuckles, Benjamin Knuckles, Brandon Knuckles, Blake Knuckles, and Brooke Knuckles of Wetumpka, LA. There are also five great grandchildren, Peyton, Brynlee, Camden, Emma and Hazel; and sister, Mildred Estelle Wheeler and husband John of Loganville, GA.
Gladys (90) was born in Suwanee, GA, August 15, 1925, the daughter of the late Essie Thelma O’Shields and Felton Harris Johnson. She has been preceded in death by three siblings, Robert and Edgar Johnson and Mary Deadwyler. She lived in East Atlanta most of her life, attending Ann E. West Elementary and Murphy High School. The Johnson family were charter members of Woodland Hills Baptist Church. After marrying “CB” she lived on Moreland Avenue where the Knuckles family operated County Line Dairy, serving the Grant Park, Ormewood and East Atlanta communities until 1957. She later moved to Dunwoody, GA and in 2008 to Hickory, NC.
Gladys served for more than 30 years and retired as a legal secretary to the late L. Travis Brannon, Jr. former chairman and managing partner at Hansell, Post, Brandon and Dorsey (now Jones-Day) one of Atlanta’s largest law firms. She was a long time member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church, North Peachtree Baptist Church in Dunwoody and First Baptist Church of Hickory.
The family wants to thank Trinity Village and the staff for their wonderful and genuine love and care for Mom and her family.
A graveside service and burial will take place in Atlanta at Greenwood Cemetery, 1173 Cascade Circle SW, on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
