Conover – James Pressley Hoover, 80 of Conover went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Carolina Caring in Newton surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on August 8th, 1944, in Alexander County, NC, James was the son of the late William Glenn Hoover and Mildred Evelyn Sherrill. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He retired from RockTenn after 42 years in the corrugated box industry. James left a legacy of love, laughter and hard work that touched everyone who knew him. He was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hoover (wife Judy) and his father-in-law, Sherman Bumgarner (wife Mable).
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Diane Bumgarner Hoover; two daughters, Kristina Hoover Lackey (husband Steve) of Conover and Kerry Hoover Smith (husband Michael) of Taylorsville; two brothers, Phillip Hoover (wife Carol) of Taylorsville and Steve Hoover (wife Becky) of Taylorsville; brother-in-law, Randy Bumgarner (wife Teresa) of Hiddenite; seven grandchildren, Patrick Keaton (wife Nikki) of North Augusta, Charles (Trey) Shook (fiancé Alia) of Hickory, Abigail Kristina Shook, Peyton Thomas Shook, Rachel N. Sanchez of Winston Salem, Emma R. Sanchez of Winston Salem and Isabella L. Simpson of Fort Mill; great granddaughter Charlotte Evelyn Keaton as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Rock Barn Golf and Spa at 3805 Club House Dr NE, Conover, NC 28613 on Thursday, July 24th, 2025. Please join us for a floating reception in loving memory of James from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Come and go as you feel comfortable to share memories, love, and light refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Caring Catawba Valley Hospice House in James’ name.
