James was born April 9, 1927 in Catawba Co. to the late George Edward and Ella Pearl Hefner Houston.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Toye Brittian Houston, a son, Gerald Houston and a brother, Leroy Houston.
He was a member of Springs Road Baptist Church, retired from Drexel Heritage as a supervisor and a WW II army veteran.
Surviving are a daughter, Jalean Renae Laws and husband, Cecil of Patterson, granddaughters, Shannon Rochelle Laws and Ginger Rae Laws both of Patterson, and Gina Crooks and husband Billy of Conover, grandson, Scott Houston and wife Dana of Taylorsville, great granddaughters, Destiny Crooks of Conover, Rebecca Houston of Taylorsville and Sasha Laws of Patterson, great grandson, Thomas Crooks of Conover, sisters, Helen Queen of Conover and Frances Moretz of Hickory, brothers, Cloyde Houston and Billy Houston both of Conover.
Services will be Friday, August, 27, at 2:00 P. M. at Springs Road Baptist Church with Reverend Jeffery G. Brown officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #48.
His Sunday school class will serve as honorary pall bearers and meet at the church by 1:45 P. M.
The family will receive friends Friday from 12:45 until1:45 P. M. at Springs Road Baptist Church.
