He was born on June 4, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Max and Henrietta Broder. Joel served in the Unites States Army. He was a huge sports fan and loved the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. Joel’s family absolutely adored him, often calling him “Skipper”. His family and friends admired his sarcastic, charming, and mischievous wit. Joel also loved telling stories of his childhood growing up in Brooklyn. He also was known for being incredibly generous.
Joel met his wife of 53 years, Cecily Pullman Broder (Cessie), at the Pullman’s Bungalow Colony in White Lake, NY where they spent many fun summers together growing up as children at the ages of 8 and 11. Their parents were lifelong friends. Joel and Cessie were married in Long Island, NY in 1966.
Survivors include his wife Cecily Pullman Broder (Cessie); daughters, Michelle Broder Pier (Rick Pier), Fraya Broder Klarich (Brad Klarich), Cory Broder Conrad (Jeff Conrad); son, Ian Paul Broder (Ashley Broder); his 8 grandchildren whom he adored; Matthew Pier, Kelsey Pier Innes (Cody Innes), Katie Pier, Nicole Klarich Santos, Jacob Klarich, Ethan Broder, Abby Broder, Lauren Broder; 3 great- grandchildren, Skylan Santos, Sage Santos, and Halen Pier ; sister, Elaine Broder Weinstein (Stan Weinstein) and countless nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Hickory Funeral Home. Rabbi Morton Kaplan will be conducting the service. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
A light fare buffet to spend time with the family will follow the burial at Hickory Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or Multiple Sclerosis Society.
