

He was born on November 16, 1936 to the late Luther Garren and Jessie Tinsley Garren in Transylvania County. Johnnie was a United States Marine Corps Veteran. He was a longtime member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church Mo-Synod. Johnnie enjoyed many years coaching, playing and attending baseball games. He dedicated 37 years to Sherrill Furniture before his retirement as a Supervisor.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son; sister, Joann McCall; and brother, Richard Garren.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Carolyn Winebarger Garren of the home; sons, Johnnie Garren Jr. (Susan) of Hickory, Michael Garren (Donna Setzer) of Conover; grandchildren, Christina Gonzales (Nick), Sarah Taylor (Brad), Scott Garren (Mary), Jordan Garren (Savana), Jacob Garren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; brother Tommy Garren; sisters, Nancy Cantrell, Agnes Phipps; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church Mo-Synod. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. at the church. Pastor David Ziehr will be officiating the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
