Michael is survived by his bride of 67 years, Margaret Mary Ryan, his children, Michele Boykin (John), Mary Ann Campbell (Donald), Michael Ryan Marcenelle (Gwen), Margaret Mary Rummel (Dave), Matthew Ryan Marcenelle (Lindsay), Ricardo Mon (Maricarmen).
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Maureen Carson (Mark), his brother, Anthony Marcenelle, and his sister, Mary Ann Vogt.
He is the beloved “Papap” to his 28 grandchildren, 21grandchildren-in-law, and 63 great-grandchildren.
Michael served in the United States Navy as a radioman on the destroyers, USS H.R. Dickson, USS Spangenberg, and USS Henley. He was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania State University and Duquesne University. He was the consummate educator and coach. He was a History teacher; a Guidance Counselor, and retired as a School Psychologist from the Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Palm Beach County Schools. After retirement, he taught in the Oxford, NC schools until the age of 88.
He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. He loved to play and organize Ping Pong, Horseshoes, and Euchre tournaments at family gatherings where his bracketology was legendary.
Michael was a devout Roman Catholic and, as our patriarch, led the nightly Family Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet until his death.
He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and served as Faithful Navigator and Grand Knight in Wellington, Florida and Clarksville, Virginia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Hickory, NC June 21, 2024 beginning with Holy Rosary at 9:30 am.
Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in North Versailles, PA.
