Virgil Guy Martin

The last surviving of 11 children born to H. Frank and Bessie Reep Martin, Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ernest, Everett, Homer, Ira, Paul, Kenneth; sisters Ollie Martin Stephens, Bertha Martin Bolch, Geneva Martin Gause, Katherine Martin Yount; First wife Vivian Ogle Martin (mother of his two children and married for 53 years); second wife Dorothy Miller Seitz Martin (married for 19 years); and son Roger Dale Martin.

He began his accomplished engine mechanic career with Catawba County Schools before moving to Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Hickory where he spent over 20 years before retiring as Fleet Superintendent. Deciding that he missed working, he joined William C. Reynolds Company part-time to maintain fleet for the plumbing, heating, and Air Conditioning Service Company.

A faithful follower of Christ Jesus, his lifetime of service included positions as deacon, Sunday school teacher and usher at West Hickory Baptist; First Baptist Church of Hickory, and Calvary Baptist.

Virgil is survived by daughter Penny G. Martin; daughter-in-law Rebekah Sigmon Martin; nephews Jack Martin (son of Ernest), Bill Martin (son of Ira), Vertus Smith (son of Vertus Ogle); nieces Patricia Martin Stone, Emily Martin Frye (daughters of Homer), Drenda Yount Moore, Neda Yount Deal (daughters of Katherine), Teresa Martin Hammer (daughter of Ken), Pamela Ogle, Holly Ogle (daughters of Vertus Ogle); Joyce Stephens Bolton and Jane Stephens Beckom (granddaughters of Ollie).

The family wishes to thank all the caregivers at TerraBella of Newton who created a loving home for Virgil during his past year of life; as well as all the staff at Carolina Caring/Catawba Valley Hospice House who aided his transition.

A graveside service led by Pastor Bert Dixon of Calvary Baptist Church will be held at Catawba Memorial Park Cemetery on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 10:30am.
