

William Augustus “Bill” Phifer, Jr. passed away July 5, 2015 at Kingston Manor in Hickory. Born February 15, 1929 in Catawba County, NC, he was the son of the late William A. Phifer, Sr. and Beulah Emma White Phifer. Bill was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Hickory where he was active in the Lutheran Laymen’s League and he had retired as a supervisor from Duke Power. He served in the US Army National Guard for 20 years and was a former member of the Kiwanis Club. In his spare time, Bill loved woodworking and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alma Dean Spencer Phifer; and sisters, Margie Lail, Edith High, Delacy Abernethy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Deborah P. Hull and husband, Gary of Vale, NC, Dawn Phifer Taylor and husband, Steve of Charlotte, NC, Deidre P. Griffin and husband, Chuck of Morganton, NC; seven grandchildren, Aaron Hull, Ashley Hull, Asten Hull, Amber Bolick Benfield, Stephanie Taylor, Joshua Allen, and Kendrick Allen; four great-grandchildren, Kristen Hull, Conner Hull, Kaylee Allen, and Anaiyah Hull.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at St. Stephens Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Hickory, NC, with Rev. David Guelzow officiating. A private graveside service for the family will be held in the church cemetery prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
