It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Geraldine E. Thorsten, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who left this world peacefully on October 26, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on November 10, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, to the loving parents Roy and Tressie Thorsten, Geraldine filled her life with warmth, creativity, and a deep love for her family.
Geraldine was a devoted mother to her three beloved children: Julia Mamun (Abdullah), Elizabeth Lofton (Jonathan), and James Thorsten (Sharoly). Her heart blossomed as she became a grandmother to Athena Lubbers (Kevin), Zena Mamun, Joshua Lofton, and Shari, Jamie, and Lucas Thorsten. She found endless joy in being a great-grandmother to Felix Lubbers, and her family was her greatest treasure. Geraldine is also survived by her dear siblings, Kenroy Thorsten, Robert Williams, and Lily Williams Otto, along with a host of loving nieces and a great-nephew and a great- niece who adored her.
A woman of remarkable talents, Geraldine was a passionate writer and an avid reader, with four published books, one of which found its way into another language. She poured her heart into quilting and sewing, creating beautiful pieces that wrapped her family in love—each quilt and handmade item a testament to her dedication and affection. Her quilts for her grandchildren, cozy ottomans for her daughters, and a special Spiderman quilt for her son reflected her nurturing spirit.
Geraldine’s love for the arts and theater enriched her life, and she generously supported PBS, women’s rights, animal welfare and Native American Indians. Always seeking to learn and grow, she enjoyed swimming and exploring the intricacies of the Latin language. Her time in Italy was particularly special, where she immersed herself in the culture and proudly learned Italian.
As a lifelong educator, Geraldine was a passionate advocate for her students, working tirelessly to support their growth until her retirement in her 70s. Her commitment to pioneering a union for teachers demonstrated her dedication to creating a better future for those she taught.
Geraldine was an avid traveler who embraced every opportunity to learn and connect. From taking art classes in Costa Rica to helping restore Native homes in New Mexico, she approached life with curiosity and enthusiasm. Above all, her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Foundation, or the American Heart Association.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024, from 2-5 PM and 7-9 PM. A private final disposition will follow.
Geraldine E. Thorsten’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, creativity, and community. Her warmth and spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her, inspiring us to cherish our families and embrace life with passion and kindness.
