We celebrated your life yesterday.  So many people from so many places came to share stories, laughter and tears with us.  Clearly, you impacted everyone...not just us.  Daddy, I am missing you more and more every single day.  I don't know if I will ever be whole again without you because there is such an emptiness in my heart since you left. You are still the first thing I think of in the morning and the last thing I think of at night.  Happy Father's Day Daddy.  Missing and loving you today and forever.

I am sitting here thinking about how much I would love to be able to read to my dad all the kind, unbelievably touching things everyone has had to say about him.  It brings such a smile to my face and a warmth in my heart knowing that he would be smiling ear to ear hearing them and and so touched.  Dad, I hope you are able to somehow see this book and the the positive effect you had on so many people.  That is one of the many reasons I love you.   I miss you so much my heart continues to hurt :-(.

Where to start? The memories are many and each one filled with joy. Either upstate or on Long Island, the time spent with Uncle Joe was dear to me. 

I still recall his ghost stories told by the lake; and how he was on to my countless attempts to bluff my way in our late night penny poker games. Uncle may have been a softy, but he was a very sharp softy.  He was always ready to spend time with me, and I welcomed his attention and love.

The weekend he passed, I had a fire going in my back yard. I couldn't help but feel that Uncle Joe would be proud of my fire making and tending skills. He taught me well.

You will be missed Uncle Joe, but never forgotten.

I can't remember a special occasion we haven't celebrated together… but we will always treasure the everyday moments we spent with you.  Bringing Carvel over to us on Wednesday's, building the deck, putting the fence up, getting the squirrel out of the house!  There is no way to sum up everything you mean to us; you have touched our lives forever.  Thank you for your kindness, your humor and your casual coolness. I feel fortunate to have so many great memories with Uncle Joe. As a little girl I can remember thinking he was the coolest guy I ever knew. He would tell us incredible stories of growing up in Minnesota and life in the Marines. We would listen with amazement and with each story he became even cooler. But it wasn't just his stories that made him cool, it was so much more than that. It was the way he rolled his dress shirt sleeves up before it was fashionable, the cowboy boots, the signature white tee shirt and the warm smile that always greeted you. Growing up I spent a lot of time upstate with him. He'd take us on adventure hikes, drive us around the lake for candy, play Yatzhee for hours and show us magic tricks. He always made us feel like it was fun to hang out with the kids. I will keep those memories close to my heart forever. 

Uncle Joe, I am so glad you are at peace. You left a lasting impression on me and I will always miss you. I'm pretty sure you are up in heaven hanging out with Johnny Cash and showing him your dances moves. Thanks for being a great uncle.

Today, May 29th is our wedding anniversary. I can clearly remember every detail of that day. The weather was just like today, but when i looked through the gloom of that morning, all I could see was you, handsome in a white dinner jacket, so handsome. I knew I could never love another. In fact, I believed that morning that I could never possibly love you more. Yet, over the years, through the joys and trials of family living, my love just kept growing. Watching your daily struggle with the illnesses that claimed you brought greater depths to my love, greater than I could ever imagine. Now that you have gone before me, I am glad that I kissed you every day, that I stayed close to you every night and that I never let a day come to a close without saying,"I love you." I am still saying those words, and I hope you can hear them.

Hey Partner, I just wanted to let you know that you're the best friend anyone could ever have. You're the one that was always there to help with a project or to provide support in ones time of need. This support was provided from your heart and not out of some sense of obligation. I'm quite sure if there was a definition for true friend it would say  "Joe Mund" true as can be. The guy who never had a negative word to say about anyone even the ones that really deserved them. 

I will always have wonderful memories of the numerous weekends and weeks we spent with our families at the old lake house. The projects or work we did together were always fun and full of good times. Our trips around the lake for brews and Slim Jims, dancing at the High Jinx, the Roaring Brook and the fun trips to Lake George. And, lets not forget the water slide at West Mountain. I could go on and on about the good times that we had together if it wasn't so hard to think and write about. I miss you today and always.

Joe, you'll always be a lot better than terrific to me.

How do you share almost 50 years of your memories with someone in a few paragraphs? I can tell you it is not easy.

I was only 17 years old when Joe married my sister Lorraine. And, I  can honestly say that from the day Joe joined our family he never wavered in his desire to help all of us. While my children, Elizabeth and Christian, like to tell everyone how their Uncle Joe was their first driving instructor, it really started with me when Joe took me for my first lesson around Dyker Golf Course. Boy did he have a lot of patience. 

When Chris and I married in 1971, it was the beginning of a long and memory filled relationship with Joe (especially for Chris). There are so many memories that come to mind. Riding with Joe on a tandem bike in Eisenhower Park and having our first experience with square dancing and seeing how proud Joe was to show us the steps. Our trip to Westbury Music Fair to see Johnny Cash was unforgettable. Watching the show made me realize I knew nothing about country music but getting caught up in Joe's enthusiasm and enjoying watching him dance in the aisles made it a memorable evening. 

My time spent with Joe at Sacandaga Lake gave me some of my fondest memories. He and Chris loved to work together on all the repairs and renovations at the old lake house. They always seemed to be having such a good time (except when Joe forgot to tell Chris the electric was still on and Chris flew across the lawn). I will forever be grateful to Joe for being such a good friend and "brother" to my husband and an amazing Uncle to my children.

There is never an easy way to say goodbye to someone who was a big part of your life and you will never not miss them. But it gives me great comfort to know that Joe is now at peace and not suffering anymore.

Thank you for sharing a special moment with my husband and I when we visited New York last summer. To the entire Mund family,thank you for introducing yourselves and welcoming me into your wonderful family. It was a very special moment for me, and I am proud to say that I am a Mund just like my mom Kim and my grandpa Dick. I was able to see a glimpse of my grandpa Dick, who I was never fortunate to meet, when I connected with your family. Thank you for giving me that experience and for being such a wonderful and loving family. My prayers are with you always and I know that you will be in heaven spending that much needed time with your brother. Rest in peace and God bless you.

I remember the dilapidated wooden structure that housed a rusting water pump. It was barely large enough to get into, and there was Joe, on a dark rainy night, half in and half out, balancing a flashlight and laboring to prime the old pump so we would have water at Overlook.  

I remember the crawl space under that old house, home to more crawling creatures than we could identify. And there was Joe, crawling to the center of the house, to seal a leaking water pipe.

I remember Joe doing more than his share at the kitchen sink for many holidays and family gatherings.
That was long before it was “fashionable” for “men” to be in the kitchen.

I realize that whenever I think of Joe, he is always busy doing something. Matter of fact I can only think of two instances when we were together that he was just “taking it easy”.

One was at some catered family affair when Joe and I were standing at the bar, and between sips of his 7&7, he told me that the best thing he ever did was marry Lori. And I thought of my Vincenza and knew what he was talking about.

And the second time was just hours before his death when, peaceful with morphine, he seemed to find a momentary comfort lying in his hospital bed…unconcerned that “traffic was building”.

Each time I looked out my kitchen window at Overlook and saw Joe Mund on that riding mower, I smiled. "Joe was here" and I knew I was in for some great conversation that day. Over the years, I heard tales about his family, the marines, UPS, and stories of the north woods days when he helped with the rebuild of the Sacandaga summer place. I sold my cottage just after Joe began his bout with Alzheimers. I sometimes think his absence was one of the reasons I was able to say goodbye to the old place. Not so easy saying goodbye to him.

My last visit with Joe was at Tippy's sweet sixteen party. We did reminisce a lot that day. Right after that his struggle intensified. Jay, you kept me up to date with his situation. Every time we talked I realized how much you loved and cherished your dad. Everyone should be so fortunate to have a devoted daughter like you. But then again you had a great guy for a role model. Joe took good care of his family and often everybody elses too.  

The struggle is finally over Joe. You're in a much better place now. Thanks buddy for being my friend and bringing me to know and love your family. I miss you and expect to hear your whistle up here too.

Joe was my first “brother”, and as with a good brother, we enjoyed many good times. He taught me how to play poker (which I still play at the casinos), introduced me to red wine and Coke Cola (which I thought was a Minnesota drink), and he helped me realize that rainy days at Overlook didn't matter if you had someone to play Yatzee with.

When we bought our redwood table and chairs at Fortunoff's on Long Island, it was Joe who insisted on bringing it out to our home in Staten Island. 

Joe always spent a lot of time with my young sons, Johnny and Stephen. His endless stories were only exceeded by his endless patience.

My husband John's stroke was a very devastating time for me. Joe's kindness at that time helped me, and John and the children, survive. Why was I not surprised. Joe was always there whenever there was a need by anyone in the family. 

I have missed Joe for the past three years. Finally, no more pain, no more suffering. I am grateful he is at the peace he deserves.

I'll always remember Joe Mund as drill sergeant of the LSA bullpen. Standing there at every swim meet with his Marine Corp hat, smoking cigs down to the filter, barking orders at us kids to "Get in the bullpen". Hard exterior, soft interior. We salute you Joe Mind, you will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss and even more sorry I will not be there to support you on all on the 15th.  

I must say my fondest memory of being a child and Joe Mund was of course each Christmas when he would dress up as Santa.  We always knew it was him, but we were so excited none the less. Gosh I miss those days and am so grateful to have had such amazing neighbors as a child.

Dear Jemine, I never met your Father but I so enjoyed all of your stories about him from your posts of FB. I loved how you spent all of your days with him and all the funny stories along the way, Daddy sounded like an amazing man and he was so lucky to have you and your loving family. My deepest condolences to all of you and may his memory live a lifetime in your heart.

I remember riding in Dad Mund's new Lincoln Continental on the Belt Parkway going to Brooklyn with the Mund Family.  The ride felt like we were on a cloud.  The conversation was so much fun... all we did was laugh the whole way there.  The memories I have shared with your family--- I will always remember.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.  God Bless you Dad Mund.

Joe was the first steady boyfriend/brother-in-law in our family of 5 sisters.  He was a young, handsome Minnesotan who never needed to wear a winter coat or jacket despite our raw New York winters.....we were all impressed.

Joe and Lorraine hosted Japanese dinner parties where Joe would share  stories of his  service time in Japan. He introduced us to a whole different culture and food.  They also hosted an annual Christmas tree decorating  party, where we all gathered to trim their tree....very smart Joe.

Joe was the official "put your baby to sleep" uncle.  He had this special ability to calm the baby nieces and nephews during our family dinners and put them to sleep. Of course, Joe might catch a few winks at the same time during these holiday dinners,  after working those long, long  holiday rush hours at UPS.

Joe was always willing to help others.  I remember when we moved into our home - it needed lots of work.  Joe showed up, ready to help, tearing down walls, painting our living and dinning rooms.  Never needed to ask Joe for help more than once....and sometimes you didn't even need to ask. I am not alone when I say "thank you Joe", for always extending a helping hand.

When I say "Joe Mund", many images come to my mind....his love for "Lorrie", his daughters, his granddaughters, family, his country, the Marines, UPS, (Thomas thought all those brown trucks were "Uncle Joe's trucks" and a sighting brought a lot of excitement), Johnny Cash, Joe's black shirt....he looked so much better in that shirt than his idol...,country music, cowboy hat and boots, the "Joe Mund dance", hard working, a warm beautiful smile and a big heart.

I remember Mr. Mund with his cowboy boots and the cigarettes in his sleeve. He would always bust my chops, but I knew it was always coming from a good, fun place. He was always a great distraction from my nerves waiting in the bull pen at LSA.I used to love spending time at the Mund house when I would be visiting at Aunt Connie's house around the corner. A very handsome man with a warm heart to match. Always had a little crush on Mr. Mund. He was a great Dad, and husband, as is evident by the love shown here on these pages. I don't recall exactly when someone told me that Uncle Joe had been a Marine, but I know that it was before I even met him. So when I did meet him in person, I assumed he was a really tough guy. A tough guy that would kiss you on the cheeks and happily say he was doing just a little bit better than terrific. I thought that was genius! And I remember telling a lot of people back in Brazil about one 'tough' Marine that I met in Brooklyn... Uncle Joe, you will always be loved, and incredibly missed. Love,

Been a weepy day for me thinking about you.  I cant help but to keep looking at your pictures which brings tears to my eyes.  I dont know if the pain of not seeing you every day will ever lessen.  Just wish I could turn back time and not take that trip so I could have seen you one last time.  Not sure that guilt will ever leave me but just know that I love you so much and when its Gods will, I will see you again.  I love you Dad!!!

I know about Joe from Jay.  We worked together for less than 2 years; from the moment i met Jay, i knew Joe.  He was the light of her life, and the man who provided love, light, strength, wisdom and character.  He helped shaped Jay into the wonderful caring lady she is....someone I can always count on. My favorite memory of Mr. Mund is at championships for LSA. He was a powerhouse for Parkway pool. Your family has been blessed to have such a great man in your life.

A pack of Kool rolled up in the sleeve of the white t-shirt he wore while zig-zagging across the lawn upstate with a mower...7&7s...card tricks...cowboy boots...stories about ghosts off the China coast...the pride of being a Marine and of working at UPS... tattoos that were never entirely clear, but never faded either...realizing that as tough as he seemed, he was a huge softy around his granddaughters...captain may I... high jinx shows that made me laugh even if I was too young to understand them...getting to say goodbye and seeing him surrounded by all of the special women in his life...a life that was just a little bit better than terrific.

My favorite memory of Mr. Mund revolves around swimming. Swimming was all our lives during the summer! It is funny how even though our teams were opponents, when the day was done we cheered each other on well into our teen years. When I think of my childhood, LSA tops the list! Many life long friends were made and because of LSA, my love for swimming has grown! Thank you, Mr. Mund, for being a part of my wonderful childhood!






Jemine, My special memory of your Dad was when he would walk down the road in front of our camp with his beautiful little daughters. He was so proud of you and he always had a smile on his face. Tim's best memory was going up to the ledges at camp on the snowmobiles with your dad.

Joe will always be remembered differently throughout my life. As a little kid he was a little scary, barking orders at swim meets like the Drill Sargent he was. Once I was a little older and riding in the back of the K-Car wagon on the way to swim meets, I learned there was a softer side, he would joke and tease us on the road, but still “All Business” at the meets. Once I was finished with swimming and he would come down to Jones Beach to see us, bring cake to the shack or down front for Kristin and my birthday, by then all I saw was one of the greatest men who ever lived, kind, caring, funny. Joe would have egg sandwiches or bagels in the morning for the crew that stayed over on Alpine Lane after a “night out”. 

If you ever had a cold beer or a 7&7 in the yard or at a party with Joe, you just knew he was genuine and really cared for you and those around. Once Joe misheard my new nickname while we were replacing the backyard fence and to those who know what he called me will forever be dear to me, thanks for that Joe.

You will be missed, but I know whenever I think of you, you will be right there beside me.

Joe was a great man.  A man of his word.  Someone you could trust without question.  He always made us West Coast Muselli's feel welcome at family events and gatherings.  
We will miss him but I know he is in a better place.  "Semper Fi" - always faithful.  Rest in peace Marine.

Joe, I am so happy Bob got to see you.  I know you know you have been in our thoughts and prayers for months.  As I've said from the beginning it was always you and Chris that made me feel a part of the family.  How many times we fought over washing and drying dishes during holiday events!  How many jokes you and Chris told me that I didn't get!  We had so many laughs.  
No one danced like you - pistol packing cowboy that you are.  I remember your retirement dinner - both union and management of UPS spoke so highly of you.  So many times we discussed how efficiently UPS is run - just what any Marine loves.
I know you're in a better place enveloping the love of Aunt Joan, Uncle Mac and Joe Muselli.  Semper Fi, Joe and please send my love to my brother, fellow jughead, Jim. Dear Uncle Joe,
     Ever since I was a little girl, I always admired you for the strong man that you were.  The way you took care of our family,and  your willingness to help others. But, I must tell you that my favorite memories of you were when you danced.  It always puts a smile on my face, whenever we have a family party and we do the Uncle Joe "move", and then we go on to do Uncle Mario's moves and then my Dads.  You truly are missed, but I am glad that you are not suffering anymore.  I hope that you, Uncle Mario, Aunt Joan and all those you love, who have gone before you are reunited.

Joe was a good friend and a great neighbor to Gordon,myself and our family.

   From the time I was a little boy I associated "Mr. Cool" with you. From the cowboy boots, dancing tattoos and country twang you truly were an Urban Cowboy. You told amazing, captivating tales to Thomas and I about your adventures as a Marine that kept us on the edge of our seat. You taught me many amazing things like how to "win" at Yahtzee, that saying "trouble in the Valley" was a way of rattling/distracting your opponents and how to make a wild bonfire. You taught me how to drive a car and that is was really ok to be scared to death of the critters under the upstate house. You also helped me understand that being "just a little bit better than terrific" was not only possible but a great way to approach each day. 

    In life there are few people that have the ability to leave a lasting impression while helping shape who we are and I want to thank you for being one of those people for me. I will miss you but am so grateful for the memories and that you are now at peace.

I had the pleasure of being Joe and Jay's neighbor for many years and was fortunate enough to have met Joe Mund. We used to play Texas Hold em. I remeber how we would never increase the bids. We just had a great time playing and talking all night. Joe is by far one of the sweetest men ever. He loved his family whole heartedly. I used to love seeing him on the patio when I would go in my back yard. Heaven has now received this angel. He will be dearly missed.

At a Conference I attended a Speaker commented that how you respond to the question "How are you?" speaks volumes about your personality. "Just a little better than terrific" was Joe's response...my memories of him are of a man who always literally jumped at the opportunity to help someone in need, always made time for my friends at Overlook, (who grew to love & admire him), had a great laugh, taught me to drive, taught me to sing some Country & Western music, loved to dance, loved his 7 & 7's, cheesecake and his Family. He was my earliest recollection of what today would be called "eye candy"... I called him a Hunk and he certainly was one, right to the end! He always told me if it wasn't for Lori he wouldn't be alive and that my parents were more Parents to him than his own. He was a great brother-in-law to me. I will always miss him, but I am happy he no longer suffers. Now I just see that handsome smiling face, at peace.

Dear Uncle Joe, We didn't get to see each other too often but that didn't stop me from loving and respecting you. We are family and shared a great love of your brother and my dad. You were there to comfort me in my time of sorrow. Even though I am sad you are no longer here on Earth, I am at peace knowing you are with him and all of your family in Heaven. There was no other like you, and it was plainly seen, just why God has called upon a United States marine.  May God bless you Uncle Joe and our family.

We will stroll hand in hand again

A great friend, a great man and a great friend to all.  I think of him often and all the funny things he said.  There really aren't enough words to describe him... an incredible man.

A wonderful man, father, husband and father in law with a heart of gold. There wasn't a thing he wouldn't do for anybody and he never had an unkind word to say.  He will missed.  Rest in peace BIG JOE MUND!

Some of my clearest and fondest memories is when he worked the bull pen at Championships. He was so nice to all us kids. RIP Mr. Mund

Joe Mund, such a cutie. He will be missed by many. I will miss sitting for meals with him and his smiles and eye pops.
