At the age of six, Cheri was diagnosed with type one diabetes, but was determined, and unstoppable. She was active in little league softball, and dance, and attended diabetes camp until she was old enough to become a camp counselor. Cheri found great joy in helping new campers each year and found mutual benefit in teaching children and their parents more ways to live with type one diabetes.
She was a 1996 graduate of Southwest Guilford High School and received her degree in education from UNCC. After spending some time traveling, Cheri settled into a career as a Special Education teacher, where she continued her love of helping others. She taught elementary, middle, and high school students throughout her career. She was teaching at Kiser Middle School in Greensboro, until her passing.
Cheri truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; shopping with friends, listening to music, and spending time with the people she loved most. Cheri had an uncanny ability to make people smile, simply by walking into a room. She was a ray of light on the darkest days.
She is survived by her father, Dennis Johnson, and his wife Betty. She was preceded in death by her mother, Judy Hussey Johnson, as well as her grandparents. She leaves behind her loving aunt Ellen (Hilton), her special friend Erin Williams-Reavis, several cousins, and so many friends who are considered her family. Her passing is truly devastating to all.
