David was born May 7th, 1944 in Spindale, NC.
David is predeceased by his wife, Karla Dunlap Murphy; his parents, Alfred and Alberta Murphy; and his sister, Sandra Murphy Jennings and his brother-in-laws Moody Bridges and Rev. John Jennings.
He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Kathy and Adrian Alma of Greensboro; his son and his wife, Keith and Avis Murphy, their two sons, Japeth and Levi of High Point; his sister, Melba Murphy Bridges of Rutherfordton; his brother and his wife, Sam and Francine (Gaboriault) Murphy of Greenville, SC; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He graduated from Rutherfordton-Spindale Central High School in 1963. David attended finance classes at Davidson Community College following his service in the United States Air Force. After community college, he worked for High Point Memorial Hospital in the Billing and Credit Department. David left the hospital and joined A.T. Williams Oil Co where he worked in various roles from clerk to area manager. At AMR, he handled baggage for American Airlines for several years before finding his second career as a truck driver for Federal Express (FedEx). David retired from FedEx in 2011 after 17 years of service. At its core, each of these moves was driven by one value: Love for his Family.
A constant throughout his life was English Road Baptist Church. It was there he met and later married Karla, his beloved wife of 38 years. David was a congregant and a choir member, a participant in Brotherhood Breakfasts, and when possible a volunteer at West End Food Ministries. His faith in God shaped his marriage and how he and Karla raised their two children. Watching his children and now grandchildren grow to adulthood was his greatest joy. David enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: a well cut yard, a drive along back roads, and meals with family and friends. He is remembered for his infectious laughter, a twinkle in his eye that was a sure sign of mischief, and his unfailing faith.
A Celebration of David’s life will be held at 10 am Saturday, September 28, 2019, at English Road Baptist Church and led by the Rev. Dr. James Summey. The family will receive friends directly following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont.
