Doris Sossaman, 90, beloved mother, grandmother (our Nanny) and faithful woman of God died Wednesday October 17th, 2012 at Whitestone in Greensboro. Doris was born in High Point, NC on June 15, 1922 to William Alexander and Irah Henderson Parham. She was the youngest of 5 children. She graduated from High Point High School and went to work as an operator for North State Telephone Company where she met her husband, Richard Sossaman. After WWII they made their home on Forrest Avenue in High Point and she worked at Perkinson’s Jewelry Store until giving birth to their first child in 1946. From that time on, Doris became a full-time mother and homemaker. Her greatest joy in life was her family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time in her kitchen preparing for family gatherings-large or small. Doris had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She lovingly pointed her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren to the Lord. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in High Point and enjoyed her many friends in the McFarland Sunday School Class. She was active in Lloyd’s Joyful Sounds Band, weekly Intercessory Prayer and when able, she was faithful to visit shut-ins every week after prayer. She was a wonderful friend to many and truly had a servant’s heart.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Richard Sossaman. Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Alex (Lucille) Sossaman of Raleigh, Barbara (Linwood) Collins of Jamestown, and Betty (Larry) Stevens of Trinity, ten grandchildren, Peter Stevens (Jennifer), Kenny Collins (Brandi), Susi Hudson (Brad), Bradley Stevens, Steven Collins (Jessica), Kevin Collins, Ben Sossaman, Lauren Sossaman, Anna Sossaman, and Will Sossaman, and eight great-grandchildren. Doris was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend who loved unconditionally and selflessly.
The family would like to thank the staff at Whitestone Care and Wellness Center and the caregivers she enjoyed in her home while she courageously lived with Alzheimer’s disease.
