

Jack was born in Athens, GA, April 16, 1921, a son of the late Lafayette Jackson Thompson and Minnie Hughes Thompson. He was a decorated Navy veteran of W.W.II, serving on the mine sweeper Osprey in the Atlantic, Pacific and East China Sea before the ship was sunk at the invasion of Normandy. Jack retired from High Point University after 20 years of service. He was a former member of the V.F.W. and of the Baptist faith. Jack was preceded in death by his former wives, Bonnie Thompson and Bobbie Brawley-Thompson; a son, John Thompson and ten siblings.
Surviving are five daughters, Jane Cummings and husband Ricky, Jeannette Hardeman, Faye Hayden, Marjie Stephens and husband Bud, and Billie Doster and husband Bob; three sons, Kip Thompson and wife Kimberly, Tim Thompson and wife Phyllis and Jack Thompson, Jr. and wife Barbara; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held Monday, August 11, at 2 p.m. in the Davis Funerals and Cremations Chapel by Pastor Rodney Smith. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice. .
